When my mother was expecting me. she had mumps. Being the well read woman that she is, she knew there was a chance her unborn child could have “issues”. She spoke to our family doctor who is also her uncle and he too felt it wasn’t safe/worth to continue the pregnancy. My maternal grandfather wanted a second opinion and spoke to the Travencore royal family physician and he said “because my mother is past the crucial first 3 months, there are less chance the baby would have “issues”, It was only because the second opinion was given by a highly respected physican that I am here to tell my story.
How dare any of you think that I had no right to be born and that because my mother lent me her womb, it is her perogative if I could or couldn’t live.
How dare any of you assume that just because your mother gave you birth willingly and mine unwillingly, my life is not worth just as much as yours?
How dare you condemn innocent children because you think you own your body and can play the role of judge and jury?
There is no argument about your life not being the same worth as others. Because you have crossed the stage of being a fetus and acquired human being status along with all its rights and responsibilities.
My argument is that since a fetus is so intricately dependent on the host (mother) and cannot exist without the host, at that stage it is the right of the mother to make the choice. Your mother did not make the choice to abort you for reasons best known to her. That has no implication on innocence of children, theirs rights as human beings and their worth.
Even human beings cannot trespass on the right of another human being which is why self defense is not a crime legally.
For heaven’s sake lady, get a grip on yourself! You offered an opinion, there are people who don’t agree with it….big deal!
Just like you have a right to an opinion so does the rest of the world!!
You condemn women who choose pro choice over pro life but look at you!! You can’t seem to even digest the fact that someone may not agree with you!
How dare you!!!
Sam: I still don’t get what your point is. I have not changed my view from the time I started writing the blog to now. I have been an unwanted child, my mother said over and over all my life that she wished she didn’t listen to the royal family physician and what a burden I turned out to be for her. There were all the things that are used as a flag to kill a baby.. Disability, unwilling mother, emotional abuses.. I survived .. How many children get a chance to say that? Healthy children born to seemingly nice family get abused, can end up in coma too.. But because they were already born the law works to save them. But not so if it is a foetus .
Just as you have an opinion and write your comment here, so will you let me have my say. You can’t tell me what I can or not do with MY blog
I think what people are taking exception to is your utterly condemnatory tone. it is very jarring and quite startling to come across such stark intolerance from a highly intelligent, well read and so called liberal woman. Whatever your personal views you are inviting confrontation with your condemnation. I have two children who I absolutely adore and cherish. I fell pregnant with a third pregnancy 9 years ago and after much heartache, my husband and I chose to terminate the pregnancy. It was the single most difficult decision of my life and it took me many years to come to terms with my choice. But ultimately I have never regretted my decision. While I respect your right to your opinion, I do think you quick to cast people like me as the villains. I am no less of a person or less of a mother for the choice I made. We’re my daughter to make a similar decision I know that I will be supportive and allow her free choice, can you say the same?
Jay: Good to see you here. I didn’t know you still read my blog. It’s been years since I heard from you. I have always thought about you, your son and daughter. Every year when the school starts here, I remember your son and make a silent wish that all is well.
As for the choice being supportive..to kill my future grand children? No. I won’t be supportive. It was my duty to teach my children about how babies are conceived, how to use protection and how safe protection are. Sometime ago, Yaya asked me what are the chances she could get pregnant if her partner used condom and I said there is every chance that the condom could break. And she told me, Mom,if there is a.01% chance that I could get pregnant, then it is better that I defer having sex till I reached Uni. I didn’t tell not to have sex. It was her decision. She may or may not change her mind. Her right to do so. But it was my right to tell her the truth that condoms aren’t fool safe method. Would she get pregnant before she is old enough to handle it? I don’t know. But I do know for sure that, my child will not think the world will end because she got pregnant and that her mother will kill her. If she did get pregnant,I will support her fully and will help her in every way. I have taught my children to understand that choices come with responsibilty. The trouble starts when responsibility get clouded with choice..and like you once said, some choices eventually become a prison sentence.
Prevention is much better than cure and that my children know that one of the ‘adverse’ effects of having sex is a baby ( apart from STD’s)
Having said all that, my children do live their own life and if any of them choose to kill their unborn child, there is nothing I can do to stop that. But I hope they won’t and that they know it is their duty to fight for the rights of the weakest. It won’t stop me from telling then why they shouldn’t kill my grand children, I haven’t yet resorted to bribing them, but I might do whatever it takes to save my grandchildren including shamelessly giving my cabin in the woods that all three wants to the one who is thinking of abortion! ( pathetic, I know, but we are talking about my grandchildren and I will do my best to save them!)
I can hope and keep my fingers crossed that they won’t kill their unborn children and my unborn grandchildren. Ultimtely I know my job is to teach them what is right and wrong and support them when all is going wrong and accept that they do make their own decisions.
I won’t be supportive if my children chose to abort, but I will respect their decision.. Just as I respect your decision to have the abortion or for that matter your opinions. The point of the blog was the right of the unborn child and it is getting muddled and muddled in the quagmire of choices and responsibilites!
Hi Sarah, as someone who can barely remember what they did yesterday, I’m once again struck dumb by your eidetic memory! You are often self derogatory about your physical assets ‘blind ,deaf, dumb’ I wonder if you appreciate though despite how unkind God has been with your childhood and kin, how very blessed you and yours are in having such exceptional intelligence. Your unhappy childhood has also, as sometimes is the case, ensured that your own children’s lives follow a very different path. I very much enjoy Dipping into your blog. I like that you have always been consistent in your views, and though there have been the odd occasion, such as now, when I disagree with you, I always respect your opinion and admire that unlike many people you do not sit on the fence but have a strong view and stand by it. As for my children, all is well – my daughter has started at LSE and my son has every hope of following in her footsteps. He is still as eccentric and unique as ever, and regularly has me dementedly pulling out huge chunks of my own hair, but despite all that he, every 6 foot 1 clumsy inch of him occupies a very special place in my heart – what is it about sons that they burrow into and nestle in an area of a mother’s heart that is all their own!
Jay:LSE? I wish you could see the big grin on my face.. Pls congratulate her for me.. And tell ur son, I always knew he would climb the highest mountains one day.. I actually thought of him end of January when I was dropping my son to his first day of school..and wondered what is he up to.. And wished him well in my heart. I know just what you are saying about sons!! I feel the same way !( btw, don’t know if u remember the stick drawings.. I used to show them to my son and then to now all his drawings hv followed the same style!)
Now you are being unkind to the mentally afflicted! I demand that you send me a copy of these inspiring stick drawings that have become the cornerstone of your son’s artistic endeavours! I have absolutely zero recollection 🙁 I don’t know whether to be scared or ashamed.
Jay: 7 years ago, you send me those drawings with stick figures.. They were very funny.. I don’t know if I still have ur emails. Will check this eve!
Life is too short! Your kids are important than anything else in this world.Whether you choose to condemn them or support them is your choice as everyone else have the rights to think & do what is right or how they value their relation with their own kids. Abortion or adoption ,,, it does not matter .. Wht matters is it is ultimately You who have to live with the consequence of their actions! Live & let live ! There’s always conscience that hunts you whether you are right or wrong… So just, count the blessings!!
4peach. I didn’t want to add any more controversies with this debate.. I was tempted very much to write about the no support given to women after abortion and how some of them continue to live in misery for the rest of their life. Ultimately there is a price we all pay for the decisions we make in our lives.. I cherish my children .. No doubt they are a pain in the posterior .. And I will always wish I had more kids.. A house full of kids..
