My children have school holidays and have been spending a lot of time at my friend K’s house. ( the one who took 10 years to finish medicine). Each evening when I pick them up, I ask “So what did you have for lunch?”
Before I proceed, I must tell you that I always felt that children must eat three proper meals ( breakfast, lunch and dinner) and spend a considerable amount of my time and money to follow that notion.
Most of the days, my kids had a smoothie for lunch( which they made by themselves), occasionally a snag on a slice of bread or a salad. Kids swim in the pool, go to the park and play soccer etc and when they are hungry, they go to the kitchen and make themselves a smoothie and they are all happy. My friend took time off from work and caught up on her reading:) instead of slogging in the kitchen. This was something I could never do. I would feel guilty if I had not cooked a proper lunch/dinner.
Perhaps, I got it all wrong. I was sweating for the small stuff.
My mom always made sure that we had three proper meals. At that time I took it for granted, but now I really appreciate it, especially since learning that not everyone puts in that extra effort. I understand she did it out of her love for her family; just as you are doing now. Your friend has her way and you have yours-both are fine. I don’t think you got it wrong- you were doing what was important to you the best way you could!
Anitha: You always make me feel better.. Thank you.
I have been taught that having it’s ok to skip one meal, but it CANNOT be breakfast since breakfast is the most important meal to have compared to lunch and dinner. Breakfast gives you the fuel you need to get through your day and they recommend you have a hearty breakfast, and if you do have a good breakfast, it’s not necessary to have a heavy lunch or dinner, or you can skip lunch or dinner if you eat small amounts of something healthy throughout the day, or have a light lunch/dinner.
Eating three times a day is proper, but it won’t hurt if you only have two. But everyone has their own preferences in how they want to pursue their meals, and as Anitha said, your way and your friend’s way is neither wrong. To each their own !
And my two cents 😉
J1289 : I haven’t eaten breakfast for close to 25 years. It started at the medical college, I never woke up in time to go to the mess to have breakfast..And now, I don’t like to eat breakfast. I have a cup of tea every morning.
